Visa for digital nomads. Start on 10/30/2022 - Portugal wants foreigners

After having announced last year the intention to create a specific visa for digital nomads, employees or self-employed.

Now, Portugal discloses the requirements for your application.

The applicant must demonstrate that he earns at least 4X the Portuguese minimum wage (currently €705), or €2820 per month.

Starting October 30, remote workers can apply for a temporary stay visa for up to one year or a residence permit that can be renewed for up to five years.

You can apply at a Portuguese Consulate in your country of origin, or at the Portuguese immigration agency, Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras. In addition to proof of income from the last three months, applicants must present tax residency documents and an employment contract (or proof of self-employment).

If you are already thinking about living in Portugal and researching the subject, you must be wondering, but what is the difference between this and the already known D7 visa, aka “retirees and rentiers visa”.

One of the most affordable programs of its kind, the D7 visa requires applicants to earn just €8,460 per year to qualify. But unlike the digital nomad visa, income must come from passive investment flows, such as real estate or shares in a company, or retirement rather than a monthly salary.

Portugal's popularity among remote workers is due to a number of reasons, including the low cost of living, mild climate, abundance of coworking spaces, connections to major European cities and the language, whether the country is fluent in English, or, in the case of Brazilians, familiarity with the Portuguese language.

Thus, the Portuguese government creates another alternative for those who want to live in Portugal, which demonstrates the intention to welcome everyone who wants to live there and contribute to the development of that country.
