Sephardic Jews and Descendants of Sephardic Jews (NEW CHRISTIANS)



To apply for Portuguese nationality you cannot:


have been convicted of a crime that in Portugal is punishable by a prison sentence of 3 years or more

be involved in terrorism-related activities.


And you will need to be over 18 (eighteen) years old, as well as present the following documents.



1) Updated and apostilled birth certificate

if possible, in full copy and issued by photocopy

if the certificate is not in Portuguese, its sworn translation into Portuguese must be presented

2) Criminal record:

issued by the foreign countries where you have lived since the age of 16 and its sworn translation into Portuguese.

3) Certificate issued by a Jewish community in Portugal:

the entity must have the status of a religious legal person (currently only the Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa is authorized to issue such a certificate)

4) Application addressed to the Minister of Justice, (specific form)


This application must be signed with a notarized signature or by a Portuguese lawyer.


5) Effective connection to the Portuguese community. Below are examples of ways to demonstrate connection with Portugal


- regular travel

- document of ownership, "transmitted 'mortis causa', of rights in rem over real estate" in Portugal, - other personal rights to enjoy social participation in commercial companies or cooperative as a regular participation over the last five years at the date of application in the cultural life of the Portuguese community in the country where you live, namely in the activities of Portuguese cultural and recreational associations in these communities


For those who were born or are citizens in countries whose official language is Portuguese, such as Brazil, the law provides that this connection already exists, as having knowledge of the Portuguese language, the law provides that this is a demonstration of a bond with Portugal.

For those who were not born in Brazil or other Portuguese-speaking countries, it is possible to demonstrate knowledge of the language in the following way.


- Qualification certificate or course certificate issued by a public, private or cooperative education institution recognized by Portugal at level A2 and with at least 100 hours

- Certificate in Portuguese as a foreign language, issued by taking a test at an assessment center for Portuguese as a foreign language, recognized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, by means of a protocol;


Other alternatives not included in the law but which have already been accepted in similar situations


Legal residence in Portuguese national territory;

Ownership in your name for more than three years or lease agreements entered into for more than three years, relating to real estate located in Portugal;

Have relatives residing in Portugal;

Bank account in a Portuguese bank;

Companies or public companies in Portugal;

Income Tax Return (IRS) in Portugal;

Tax Identification Number (NIF);

Enrollment in the National Health System of Portugal;

Contribution to Social Security.
